If you prefer to pull your own, walk the lot and inspect the tires on each vehicle yourself. Not all used tires are worth pulling. Here is what to look for before you spend time removing one:
Tread depth. Use a penny or a tread depth gauge. Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head facing down. If the top of his head is visible, the tread is below 2/32 of an inch and the tire is worn out. Tires with tread at or above 4/32 of an inch still have substantial life remaining.
Even wear. Look across the full width of the tire. If one edge is significantly more worn than the other, the vehicle had alignment problems. Center wear indicates over-inflation, while edge wear indicates under-inflation. Uneven wear does not necessarily make the tire unusable, but it reduces the remaining life.
Sidewall condition. Check for cracks, bulges, cuts, or bubbles on the sidewall. Any bulge or bubble means the internal structure is damaged and the tire is unsafe. Surface cracking from dry rot is common on older tires, especially in the Florida sun. Mild cracking on the surface may be acceptable, but deep cracks mean the tire should be avoided.
Age. Check the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. A tire made in the 30th week of 2019 would read 3019. Tires older than six to seven years should generally be avoided regardless of tread depth, as the rubber compound degrades over time.

OEM wheels are designed specifically for your vehicle. They match the correct bolt pattern, offset, and hub bore, so there is no guesswork about fitment. They also clear the factory brake calipers and fit inside the fender without rubbing. Pulling a matching OEM wheel from a donor vehicle is one of the most straightforward and rewarding jobs in the yard.
To find the right wheel, you need to match four key measurements:
Bolt pattern. This describes the number of lug studs and the diameter of the circle they form. Common patterns include 5x114.3 (Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai), 5x4.5 (Ford, Jeep), 5x120 (BMW, some Chevy trucks), and 6x5.5 (GM trucks). Count the lugs and measure the pattern to confirm a match.
Diameter. Measured in inches across the face of the wheel. Common sizes are 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 inches. The diameter must match your tire size for proper fitment.
Width. Also measured in inches, typically ranging from 6 to 9 inches for passenger vehicles. Width affects which tire sizes can be mounted on the wheel.
Offset. The distance from the wheel's mounting surface to the centerline, measured in millimeters. Incorrect offset causes the wheel to sit too far in or too far out, potentially rubbing against suspension components or fender lips. Factory wheels from the same model and year will always have the correct offset.
Removing a wheel from a vehicle in the yard is one of the simplest jobs. Check our self-service yard guide for what else to bring. Loosen the lug nuts with a lug wrench or socket, lift the wheel off the hub, and carry it to the counter. If you need multiple wheels, bring a hand cart or wagon to transport them more easily. Inspect each wheel for cracks, bends, and curb damage before pulling.
