The alternator charges your battery and powers your vehicle's electrical system while the engine is running. A failing alternator causes dim lights, dead batteries, and warning lights on the dashboard. Used alternators are one of the most commonly pulled electrical parts in our yard. They are relatively easy to remove with basic hand tools and are available for virtually every make and model on the lot.
The starter motor cranks the engine when you turn the key or press the start button. A bad starter results in clicking sounds or no response at all. Used starters are affordable and straightforward to pull. They are typically bolted to the engine block or bell housing with two or three bolts, plus a power cable and a signal wire.
Engine wiring harnesses, body harnesses, and door wiring harnesses are available depending on what is on the lot. Wiring harnesses are more time-consuming to remove than individual components, but they can save you hundreds of dollars compared to buying new. If your vehicle has rodent damage, melted wiring, or corrosion from a flood, a used harness from a clean donor vehicle is often the best repair option. Headlight assemblies, taillight assemblies, fog lights, parking lights, and side marker lights are easy to pull and always in demand. Check the lens for cracks, hazing, and moisture intrusion before pulling. A clean, clear lens with an intact housing is what you are after.

Alternators. Spin the pulley by hand. It should rotate smoothly without grinding, scraping, or excessive play. Look at the terminal connections for corrosion. Sniff the back of the unit near the windings. A burnt smell indicates the alternator overheated and may be damaged internally.
Starters. Inspect the housing for cracks and the mounting flange for damage. Check that the Bendix drive gear moves freely by pressing it inward. Look at the electrical connections for corrosion or melting. A clean, intact starter from a vehicle with no obvious electrical problems is generally a good bet.
Wiring harnesses. Trace the harness from end to end looking for melted insulation, cut wires, bare copper, corrosion on connectors, and signs of previous amateur repairs like electrical tape splices. A clean, unmodified harness from a matching donor vehicle is ideal.
Lighting. Check the lens for cracks, UV damage, and moisture inside the housing. Make sure the mounting tabs and clips are intact so the assembly mounts securely on your vehicle. Check that the bulb sockets are clean and undamaged.
Always disconnect the battery on the donor vehicle before pulling any electrical component. This prevents short circuits and sparks. Use the correct connector release techniques rather than pulling on wires. Most automotive connectors have a locking tab that must be pressed or lifted before the connector separates. Forcing a connector apart will break the tab and make reinstallation difficult.
Label each wire and connector as you remove it. Masking tape and a marker work well. Take photos of the wiring layout before you start. This documentation is invaluable when you are reinstalling the part on your own vehicle, especially with complex harnesses that have dozens of connections.
Bring zip-lock bags for small parts like relays, fuses, and screws. Wrap wiring harnesses loosely to avoid kinking, and use cable ties to bundle connectors together so they do not get tangled during transport.
Electrical part pricing varies by component. Small items like relays, fuses, and individual sensors are very affordable. Alternators and starters are moderately priced.
